There's Room for Everyone
by Anahita Teymorian
Age Range: 6-8
The young narrator tells us that before he was born, there was only a little space in his mother’s tummy, but there was enough room for him. As a child he found there was also plenty of space in his home for all his toys and the library had space for all the books he wanted to read. Once an adult he knows there’s room for all the stars in the sky including the moon and for all the fish in the ocean too, but he cannot understand why humans need to fight over space and territory. Surely there is room for everyone?
Iranian author/illustrator Anahita Teymorian’s poignant metaphorical tale follows the narrator as he grows up and struggles to understand the world. Encapsulated in stunning artwork of a bold, rich palette of colours – one double-page spread shows two tanks facing each other fighting over “Big Spaces”, she cleverly addresses some serious issues whilst providing a positive message – if we are kind enough to each other, there will be room for everyone.
At the back of the book Teymorian explains how she came up with the idea for the story after watching the TV news showing “people fighting each other for a piece of land … a piece of planet Earth.” A powerfully evocative picture book with simple answer for our troubled world.
Other titles by Teymorian include: The Clever Mouse (2015) and A Bird Like Himself (2015) both reviewed on the Outside In World website.
