‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
Dance of the Eagle and the Fish (The)
by Aziz Nesin, Alison Boyle
Age Range: 6-8
From the highest peak, Kartal the ancient eagle contemplates the whole world
beneath. He feels powerful and strong and is reassured in the knowledge that his
figure is embodied in flags and shields all over the world. But while Kartal is fearless
overland, he remains scared and powerless in front of the enormity of the
sea. Then Balik, the fish queen of the seas, leaps from its depths and meets
Kartal. They both become attracted to each other and rapidly fall in love. But how
can their love survive while one needs the sky and the other the sea?
The poetic narrative beautifully complements the sentimental nature of this traditional Turkish tale, while the colourful watercolour illustrations by Kagan Güner represent a style that has not been previously seen in picture books for children in this country and which will bring pure joy to the eye.
