‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Noisy Classroom (The)
by Ieva Flamingo
Age Range: 9-11
It’s not easy being a child – especially in the noisiest class in the school. Meet SāraSelma, Rudolfs, Maris, Alise, Anna and Pēteris as they whirl through a heady variety of poems in this collection which are both mischievous and playful. Whether it’s sitting in a Wi-Fi hotspot, an annoying dinosaur who likes doughnuts and hot chocolate, trying to convince your parents that you really don’t have any homework or agreeing that even the Headmaster was young once and scared of the dark, there is plenty to engage the young reader.
Latvian poet Ieva Flamingo has captured just the right tone and some tongue in cheek humour that will definitely appeal to readers. Translating poetry is never easy and Žanete Vēvere Pasqualini, Sara Smith and Richard O’ Brien have done an excellent job in capturing the humour which is enhanced by the comic-style black and white illustrations by Vivianna Maria Staņislavska making this collection accessible to whole new English audience.
The Bonus Bits at the end of the book includes learning some Latvian words, biographies of the poet, illustrator and translators as well as finding out about the publisher and a section with some great ideas for writing your own poem.
