‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Clementine Beauvais
Age Range: Under_5
While happily playing in the park the narrator’s mother tells her son to “Go and say hello to that little boy over there!” The problem is though, what if you don’t want to say hello? What if the little boy isn’t really a little boy at all? Perhaps he’s a MONSTER in disguise? Maybe, there’s a secret cave under the sand where the monster has lured children who are forced to look after him – to clean, cook and comb his fur. But could there be a way to escape to safety by digging a tunnel?
French author Clémetine Beauvais has written a funny, heart-warming story that will resonate with young readers. As the narrator says he can’t imagine his mum saying hello to people she doesn’t know so why does she thinks he should talk to a strange boy he doesn’t know? The narrator’s vivid imagination ensures there is a twist in the story and the accompanying comical illustrations are provided by UK illustrator Maisie Paradise Shearring. Beauvais is the author of the successful teenage novel Piglettes published in 2017 by Pushkin Children’s Books which she translated herself.
