Bear's Song (The)
by Benjamin Chaud
Age Range: 6-8
It is winter time and deep in his den Papa Bear is getting ready to hibernate, but Little Bear has other things in mind instead and is eager for some honey. When Father Bear realises his little one has run off, he dashes through the forest in search of him.
Papa Bear runs through the woodland, then through the hustle and bustle of the big city, avoiding the chaotic traffic and big crowds of people. Finally he spots Little Bear racing after one frazzled-looking bee. Papa Bear wants to stop him and he follows him inside the opera house and finds himself in a magnificent room with ornate chandeliers, musicians playing and people chatting, eating, drinking waiting for the show to commence. Then Papa Bear rushes through the backstage door and to his horror ends up centre stage. What should he do now; rush off or sing his special lullaby Bear song? But will the audience be impressed by his performance and more importantly will Father Bear finally find Little Bear?
Written and illustrated by Benjamin Chaud, each double-spread page is generously illustrated with lots of detailed colourful cartoon-like drawings of people and objects which make it a visual feast. Children will love this book as it is a hide-and-seek, Where is Wally? type of story where the busy artwork will stimulate the attention of young readers trying to locate the mischievous Little Bear.
This is a large format picture book produced in the wonderful tradition of most of the excellent picture books that come from France. Chaud has illustrated more than 60 books and is also the illustrator of the Pomelo series and I didn’t Do My Homework Because… .
