‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: 6-8
While walking home after a trip to the cinema, Matt and his best friend Lisa encounter a strange beast with yellow eyes darting off down a dark alley. It is only when Matt gets home that he realises he’s been bitten on the hand. When his skin starts itching, his eyes turn yellow, his voice becomes gruff and one hand has grown claws where his nails used to be, he knows Lisa is the only one he can confide in. He seems to be turning into a werewolf! The only problem is how is he going to stop a total transformation at full moon in a few days’ time?
Born story-teller Cornelia Funke manages effortlessly to keep all the suspense and drama of a much longer novel within the pages while David Roberts’ witty black-and-white illustrations complement the text perfectly.
Young Werewolf has dyslexia friendly features and is also ideal for reluctant readers too. The short sentences with special line, character, paragraph spacing and font ensure that there is not too much text on each page. There are lots of chapter breaks, special cream paper which minimizes glare together with lots of illustrations to help with the understanding of the story.
