Wild Animals of the South
by Dieter Braun
Age Range: 9-11
Wild Animals of the South is another stupendous encyclopaedic book following on from Wild Animals of the North. It showcases some of the most magnificent creatures inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere. This intricate study of wild animals by German illustrator Dieter Braun is breath-taking.
As well as the sumptuous illustrations it offers an accurate biologically representation of each animal. Whether it’s the majestic Giraffe, in soft yellow and pale green hues, or the stunning Okapi, in vivid red and orange from Africa; the magnificent close-up of the Ocelot and colourful Poison Dart Frogs, across a double page, from South America; the ’ common Kingfisher from Asia; the Red Kangaroo from Australia or the Emperor Penguins from Antarctica. Each and every one is perfectly captured.
Braun's imaginative artwork is a mixture of digital media, pencil and watercolour and is defined by clean, simple geometric shapes that create an incredible effect. The illustrations are accompanied by witty descriptions about the animals and there is also an illustrated index with cameo images of each animal at the back of the book.
Like Wild Animals of the North, this is definitely one to treasure too.
