See You When I See You
by Rose Lagercrantz
Age Range: 6-8
Dani is off on a school trip to the zoo. The teacher tells all the children how to stay safe and not to get lost, but Dani manages to become separated from the others after she runs off when she is made fun of by her tormentors Micky and Vicky. As another class rushes past Dani sees someone she recognises – her best-friend Ella. They are so happy to see one another and to be together again. Ella wants to play and persuades Dani to sneak off with her. What should Dani do?
See You When I See You is the fifth stand-alone title in the chapter book series about Dani from the popular Swedish duo, author Rose Lagercrantz and illustrator Eva Eriksson.
This time Dani has to face up to new challenges: her Dad is preoccupied with his new girl-friend Sadie, which Dani would rather he wasn’t, and her friend Ella is full of rebellious ideas attempting to encourage her to follow suit.
As with the previous titles Lagercrantz's text navigates Dani’s emotions sensitively, whether its towards her Dad's new girlfriend Sadie, the bullying by two of her classmates, her fear and confusion when she discovers she is lost or her conflicting feelings when dealing with her best friend’s rebelliousness. The simple, expressive pen and ink illustrations by Eva Eriksson convey emotion as well as bringing a gentle humour to the story.
