Looking for Lord Ganesh
by Mahtab Narsimhan
Age Range: 6-8
Anika misses Mumbai since she emigrated from India, particularly her grandmother who was always there for her. “When you have a problem ask Lord Ganesh” her grandmother would tell her. “He will always answer your prayers.” Remembering this advice Anika prays to Lord Ganesh because she wants to find a way to help her friend Hadiya fit in at school. But Lord Ganesh is slow to respond so Anika decides to look on the internet – perhaps if she were to send him a message that might work. As Anita begins to find the answers she wonders whether Lord Ganesh has really been helping her, or has she been relying on her own inner wisdom all along?
Looking for Lord Ganesh by Indian born author Mahtab Narsimhanan gives Indian mythology a contemporary twist. Written in straightforward prose it gently addresses Anika’s dilemma of finding a way to encourage tolerance and inclusion from her classmates. The striking illustrations by German artist Sonja Wimmer really help carry the story with their rich, colourful watercolour brush strokes that sweep across the pages. An ideal book for teachers to introduce Indian culture and Lord Ganesh the Hindu Elephant God.
