Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Kochka)
by Selma Lagerlof, adapted by Kochka
Age Range: 6-8
When Nils makes the unfortunate mistake of teasing an elf, he gets his comeuppance. He is bewitched and shrunk to the size of a thumb – No more than a few centimetres tall. Nils’s adventures are only just beginning as he takes off on the back of a young white gander called Martin to join a flock of wild geese on their flight to Lapland. Led by Akka, the leader of the wild geese this journey will take Nils around Sweden where he will experience wonder, adventure and danger.
This exquisitely illustrated picture book by Olivier Latyk and retold by Lebanese author Kochka, (translated in-house by Words and Pictures), is based on the most famous book by Selma Lágerlöf, winner of the 1909 Nobel Prize for Literature. Kochka has created a modern and playful narrative that honours the Swedish children's classic whilst at the same time introducing this funny and exciting tale to a whole new audience. Latyk’s vivid illustrations, in their predominantly blues and reds, together with the intricate, delicate die cut pages really do capture the magic of this lovely retelling of this famous classic.
