Fox and Goldfish
by Nils Pieters
Age Range: 6-8
Fox and Goldfish are the best of friends but Fox knows that Goldfish is very unwell. Before it's too late he wants to show his friend the world and ensure they spend as much time together as possible. Fox takes Goldfish on an amazing journey beyond the fishbowl. Together they take a swim in the ocean, go for a bike ride in the Grand Canyon, admire Mount Fiji, dance in the rain, go skiing and even make it to the moon. Finally, Fox realises that it's time to let Goldfish go.
Fox & Goldfish by Flemish author and illustrator Nils Pieters is an almost wordless picture book, apart from two bits of text on the first and last page, so it's the strikingly colourful watercolour illustrations that carry the story of friendship and loss in such a charming and thoughtful way. Each double-page spread, from the incredible adventures the friends share to the final emotive spread of Fox sitting in front of a gravestone with a photo of Goldfish and the words "Here lies Goldfish. He saw the entire world!" display both joy and pathos. Letting go and loss is dealt with in a subtle way emphasising the importance of friendship, a celebration of life and having wonderful memories. A beautiful and timeless picture book.
