‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Leo Timmers
Age Range: Under_5
Gus's workshop is full of paraphernalia; everything is kept and nothing is wasted because Gus knows that there will be a use for them. One by one Gus's friends come to the garage with their problems. Whether it's his friend Rico the Rhinoceros, whose scooter seat is far too small for him or Gina the Giraffe who finds her car a tad chilly, Gus can always find an ingenious solution.
Award-winning Belgian author and illustrator Leo Timmers has a large following in his native Belgium. Gus's Garage was inspired by Timmers love of vintage cars. The rhyming couplets in English, (by acclaimed New Zealand poet James Brown), together with the illustrations are a perfect marriage in this delectable picture book.
The repetition in the rhyme and the vibrant artwork of Gus's incredible wacky inventions – from a cooling system made with a fridge that doubles as an ice-cream machine for Miss Penguin, a central heating system encompassing a wood burning stove with pipework attached to coloured tin drums encasing Gina Giraffe to keep her warm, or a makeshift shower for Gus at the end of an exhausting day – are all a joy to pour over. Gus's Garage is sure to become an enduring favourite along with another Timmers favourite - Who's Driving? (2005)
Gus's Garage is the fifth book published in English by Gecko. Other titles, including the above, are: Bang (2013), I am the King (2007) and The Magical World of Mr. Rennie (2012).
