‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

As Black as Ebony
by Salla Simukka
Age Range: 14+
Lumikki Andersson is back in Finland after her ordeal in Prague ( As White as Snow ) and she is trying to get her life back on track. She has a new boyfriend, the lovely, easy-going Sampsa and for the first time is beginning to feel happy, although she is still plagued by dreams of her ex-boyfriend Blaze and knows deep down that she is not over him.
Lumikki’s equilibrium doesn’t last long. Soon she is receiving mysterious messages and texts from an anonymous source. Someone is watching her and appears to know her intimately and things about her family history, stirring up memories that Lumikki doesn’t fully understand. She can tell no one; if she does both her life and theirs will be in danger. Lumikki is now more alone than ever.
When Blaze suddenly reappears Lumikki is torn, he knows her better than anyone, but can she trust him? To stop her tormentor, Lumikki must uncover a dark secret that has haunted her family for years.
This is third and final volume in the stunning thriller sequence from acclaimed Finnish crime writer Salle Simukka. As with As Red as Blood and As White and Snow this is another well-crafted page-turner with a fast paced story. It has all the key ingredients of a thriller intertwined around the topical subject of obsession and living in fear of a stalker.
Simukka's writing continues to be exceptionally atmospheric in this final novel weaving the main story with a sub text of a terrible family tragedy. Another excellent translation by Owen F. Witesman makes this a truly enjoyable read.
