‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Story of King Lion (The)
by Sibylle von Olfers
Age Range: Under_5
King Lion is having a feast and he has asked all his animal subjects to bring him their favourite meal. A variety of tasty dishes are presented – truffle stew from the pig, seawater lemonade from the fish, cheesecake from the cow, snail sausages from the hedgehog and thistle salad from the donkey. But which dish will King Lion like the best?
‘The donkey thinks prickly
thistles are delicious
He mixed up a salad
Both spiky and nutritious’
This enchanting, classic by Sibylle von Olfers (1881–1916), first published in 1912, is told in rhyming verse and used a blend of natural observation and simple design to create beautiful illustrations in the Art Nouveau style.
