‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

Who Will Comfort Toffle?
by Tove Jansson
Age Range: 6-8
The Moomin books are already contemporary classics of children’s literature and these two sumptuous picture book versions of Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories are a total joy.
In Who Will Comfort Toffle? the mysterious noises in the night coming from the forest succeed in driving Toffle from his home in the middle of the woods. On his journey he sees a crowd of folk ‘ all laughing with each other, taking time to share a joke’. Because Toffle is too timid to talk to them he feels utterly alone. Eventually he reaches the seashore and discovers a message in a bottle from a girl called Miffle who is crying out for help.
Sophie Hannah's translation is witty and poetic and they are vividly brought to life by the glorious highly original illustrations that are full of vibrancy and colour. The sophisticated novelty design of the cut-through hole pages together with the rhyming narrative succeeds in bringing these tales alive. The Typography, design, illustration and musical text succeed in making them a memorable reading experience that children and grown-ups will want to revisit again and again.
