‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

Vitello becomes a Businessman
by Kim Fupz Aakeson
Age Range: 6-8
Vitello and his mum are watching a programme on TV about a school boy who has just earned a million pounds. Vitello isn’t actually quite sure how much a million pounds is but when he hears the boy on TV say “You just have to buy low and sell high”, Vitello believes he too has a nose for business. With the help of his friends Max and Harry and little squirt William, Vitello decides to set up in business. “We’ll think of something free that we can sell high” he tells his friends. His idea is not popular with everyone and chaos ensues when they put their plan into action.
Danish author Kim Fupz Aakeson has created a series of stories depicting the trials and tribulations of the mischievous Vitello. The world is seen through his eyes as he narrates his escapades with a wonderful off-beat humour. The cartoon-like illustrations by Niels Bo Bojesen really lend themselves to the story making Vitello an instantly lovable character.
There are some hilarious descriptions relating to Vitello’s understanding of ‘having a nose for business’, with a comical illustration of his three friends all touching their noses and because of their lack of success as they agree that they all must have the wrong noses!
A best-seller series in Denmark, there are four other books about Vitello: Vitello Scratches a Car, Vitello gets a Yucky Girlfriend, Vitello wants a Dad and Vitello carries a Knife.
