‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Vincent Broecvielle
Age Range: 14+
The beach is packed with people everywhere and everyone is talking, in fact it’s a hubbub! Hubbub is a unique blend of art and humour that transports the reader to a summer sun-soaked beach immersing them in the laziness and craziness of the seaside. A witty and evocatively illustrated book by French author Vincent Brocvielle it provides snippets of text so that the reader becomes an observer; eavesdropping on broken fragments of conversation, almost as if a microphone has been left lying on the sand. Hervé Tullet’s amusing pictorial interpretation provides a colourful and often comic view of humanity as they enjoy their leisure time.
The heavy black rough outlines of the figures on the beach, whether they are sunbathing, swimming or playing games together with differing shades of bronze bodies in their various positions are all magnificently captured by Tullet. Some of the illustrations are in black and white only – a daub of thick black paint outlining silhouettes on a grey background, while others are in full colour.
Hubbub is an art book with a strange twist that has been masterfully translated from the original French by Sarah Ardizzone. Although not a book specifically aimed at children, this is suitable for young people who have an interest in art and will appreciate such an evocative sun-soaked feast.
