‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

by Komako Sakai
Age Range: Under_5
One night Hannah wakes up. It is still dark outside and everyone else is asleep except Shiro the cat. Hannah discovers a night-time world of adventure and with nobody awake to tell her off she can do just as she pleases.
Japanese author and illustrator Komako Sakai has created a gentle tale that combines simple language with beautifully executed chalk and charcoal illustrations. Their muted colours capture the innocence and wonder of a young child as she tip-toes around the house exploring at night.
Sakai’s skill is in the way she captures Hannah and her night-time antics - perching on the toilet with Shiro by her side in a litter tray or the double-page-spread of Hannah surrounded by toys as she plays in bed. The expressive drawings show a restless toddler which many parents will be able to identify with. This is a lovely bedtime story for sharing.
