Topsy Turvy World
Age Range: Under_5
Everything is the wrong way round in this quirky picture book. There are mice chasing cats, penguins up a palm tree and a hare hunting the hunter with a shot gun. Then there is the zoo keeper in a cage eating a hot dog while the lion sits placidly outside, a horse riding the jockey and a house with water gushing out of it and firefighters battling the fountain with flames spurting out of their hoses. The cheeky humour extends to a glimpse of some nude lady bathers who look on while a man retrieves a stick from the river for his dog.
Topsy Turvy World is a cleverly conceived somewhat bizarre role reversal wordless picture book by German illustrator Atak, (a pseudonym for the German illustrator Hans-Georg Barber), brought to the UK by Flying Eye Books, a new imprint of NoBrow Publishing. His surreal illustrations are truly a visual feast with a riot of colour across double-page spreads.
There is so much going on it that Topsy Turvy World it can be looked at again because it is still possible to miss something. Children will have great fun spotting all the things that have been turned upside down in the strange and funny situations depicted, and who is the mysterious mouse who appears on every page? This is a wonderful wordless book that will entertain adults just as much as children.
