‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Michel Van Zeveren
Age Range: Under_5
In the jungle a little frog finds an orphaned egg. “That’s mine!” he says possessively. But he is not the only one who lays claim to it! The snake also wants the egg, so too does the eagle and the lizard, whose fight over it sends the egg flying into the path of an elephant, who demands, angrily, “Whose is this?”
Michel Van Zeveren’s bold illustrations with their animated feel, really carries this picture book. Almost like a comedy sketch, each contender for the egg successfully uses the advantage of their size to intimidate the previous owner. The expressive eyes give the animals their comical appeal and the surprise ending underlines the message of ‘being careful about what you ask for’.
Similar to Poo Bum, another of Gecko’s inspired choices; That’s Mine has a delightfully unexpected ending that children will love, ensuring that it will become a firm favourite to be read again and again. The text is both simple and humorous which is good for repetition and reading aloud.
