A Suitcase, a Cat, and a Tuba
by Judith Loske
Age Range: Under_5
Lottie has a big, old brown leather suitcase which was a gift from her Grandpa. It’s full of secrets, things that Lottie has discovered in the street or in the grass and sometimes even on a bus. All these treasures are put in the suitcase which Lottie keeps locked to ensure that her secrets remain secret, but sometimes Lottie wishes she had someone to share them with.
Lottie takes her suitcase everywhere with her and the other children laugh and make fun of her shouting nasty words. Leon, the boy next door sits alone every day playing his tuba in secret between the clothes drying on the line; Lottie likes to listen to his music. Leon has a big, fat white cat called Mozart who spends all his time with him but one day he disappears and the tuba falls silent.
This is a gentle story about loneliness, being different and friendship. German author and illustrator Judith Loske has created expressive illustrations that perfectly capture the emotions of this story – Lottie and Leon’s loneliness, the bullying Lottie encounters and the growing friendship between the two who discover a common thread of understanding between them.
