Five Nice Mice & The Great Car Race
by Chisato Tashiro
Age Range: 6-8
There is to be a Great Car Race on Mouse Day in Mouse Town. The starting line is in front of Mouse Assembly Hall and the grand prize is ‘The Ultimate Piece of Cheese’ – the biggest cheese anyone has ever seen!
The Five Nice Mice – Taro with his yellow scarf, who is easy going and strong; Kuro with a funny little knot in his tail, who is a clever mechanic and inventor; Chibi, the youngest with her green bracelet, who is very loyal and doesn’t like being alone; Gure with his one blue sock, who is an adventurer and Shivo, a gentle and thoughtful mouse who is proud of her long tail – decide to take part in the Great Car Race and set about designing a racing car. They are very inventive using ‘bits and bobs, odds and ends, and even a couple of unusual thingumajigs’ and they don’t stop until they have collected everything they need to build their car.
Finally the day of the Great Race arrives and competition is fierce with plenty of other fast cars, as well as other obstacles to overcome along the way before they can cross the finishing line. Can the Five Nice Mice achieve their goal and win the ultimate prize?
This is a delectable tale by Japanese author and illustrator Chisato Tashiro. The comical, delicate illustrations that define the character of each mouse together with the intricate details of building the car, taking part in the race and the Mouse Town racing circuit will engage any young child.
