Snow Queen (The) Retold by Sarah Lowes
by Retold by Sarah Lowes from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen
Age Range: 9-11
This is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen by Sarah Lowes with sumptuous illustrations by French artist Miss Clara. An evil magician creates a remarkable mirror that increases the ugly side of human nature and shrinks the goodness to almost nothing. The mirror falls into the hands of the beautiful Snow Queen who realises that it is the perfect weapon against happiness. As the mirror cracks and shatters into millions of pieces the splinters scatter all over the world causing hatred and bitterness to reign.
Kay and Gerda are the best of friends but when two tiny splinters of glass enter his eye and heart causing him to reject his family and to disappear and Gerda sets out on a perilous journey to rescue him from the frozen palace of the wicked Snow Queen. Along the way she is met with all kinds of challenges but she receives help from a raven, an outlaw girl and a wolf. However, her most powerful weapon against the Snow Queen is her generous and loving heart.
The exquisite illustrations are sophisticated, surreal and dreamlike in quality. Miss Clara creates her illustrations by making miniature maquettes of her characters and building detailed scenes in which to photograph them.
This is a classic Hans Christian Andersen tale of courage, endurance and friendship and together with the atmospheric illustrations of Miss Clara will make this a firm favourite with young readers.
