The Summer Gang (C.H.I.X)
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: 9-11
Charlie, Hannah, Izzy and Xa decide to have their own gang and call themselves the C.H.I.X. after the first letter of their names and the chickens that Charlie sometimes looks after. Together they promise to keep each other’s secrets and have the best adventures ever.
Charlie is a bit of a tom boy; her mum drives a taxi and is often working long hours so she has to visit her Grandma who is rather stern and forbidding. When her Grandma has to go away for a few days Charlie is expected to look after the hens and the garden. The girls take the opportunity to use the house as their meeting place and to plot their revenge on the Piranhas, the boy gang who have let the chickens out of their enclosure.
Cornelia Funke has written an entertaining novel about friendship, school and boys. The other title in the series about the C.H.I.X. is The New Girl.
