Cat and the Bird (The)
by Géraldine Elschner
Age Range: 6-8
A cat has a comfortable home with everything he needs to be happy but there is just one problem – his home is a gilded cage that is locked tight. He looks out on the beautiful garden outside and watches a bird singing in the treetop. He envies the bird and dreams of being free. He even dreams of catching the bird but one day the cat makes an unusual request – one that could change his life or be a mistake for the bird.
Géraldine Elschner has created a whimsical tale about freedom and friendship around the work of the artist Paul Klee’s painting ‘Cat and Bird’. The magnificent, playful colour illustrations by Peggy Nille create a real pathos. Influenced by Klee’s bright palette and use of shapes and line, it captures beautifully the Cat’s longing for freedom and his exuberance once free to roam in the garden.
At the back of the book there is a reproduction of ‘Cat and Bird’ by Paul Klee painted in 1928 together with some useful information about the artist and his work. Another beautiful art book from Prestel in the ‘Pictures That Tell Stories: Art for Children’ series.
