Babar's Counting Book
by Laurent de Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
This is another title along similar lines to that of Babar’s Book of Colours., which explores numbers rather than colours. The intention of this book is to teach children to count and to facilitate this it uses characters from the very popular Babar stories.
The children ask Babar to go out and play but their father is too busy and suggests to Pom, Flora and Alexander that they go outside instead to see what they can find. Flora then has the clever idea of counting everything they see so that they can report back to Babar when they have finished. They see one bird, two balloons, three cars, four hippos, five crocodiles, six ostriches, seven umbrellas, eight parrots, nine camels and ten storks.
When they get back home Babar asks them if they really can count up to ten. The last pages have double spreads, one with numbers up to ten and the other one up to twenty. The pages have different number of animals for the reader to count and to practise.
Created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931 from an original bedtime story by his wife, Babar has lived on through his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years. Building on the original framework he has created many new and exciting adventures for the elephant family.
