‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Laurent Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
King Babar, Queen Celeste and their children, Pom, Flora and Alexander are on holiday at the Grand Hotel, Celesteville-on-Sea, a popular seaside resort. However, peace and relaxation is not what they get when a series of robberies take place. First, the grand piano is stolen from the hotel, then King Babar’s car disappears and finally the beautiful gold statue of Babar due to be unveiled in the town, vanishes too. Cousin Arthur and the rest of the family set out to find the culprits but with too few clues to follow can they outwit the cunning thieves?
Created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931 from an original bedtime story by his wife, Babar has lived on through his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years. Building on the original framework he has created many new and exciting adventures for the elephant family.
