‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Konichiwa! Welcome to the world of the Kokeshi – small traditional Japanese dolls made of wood. The first double-page-spread of this colourful interactive book introduces the many different Kokeshi dolls who are wearing a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured kimonos. Meet Sen’jo who loves new hairstyles or Yumi who shows us her apartment and introduces her family; then there is Mizuko who loves to take long baths with her friends and Ayuka who goes to the Panda School where the Kokeshi are wearing traditional Japanese school uniforms.
Complete with lift-the flaps, die cuts and lavish gate-folds, French illustrator and designer Annelore Parot has created a charming book that will engage the reader and introduce them to a completely different world. Each page has some words in Japanese together with the English translation together with explanations of the kimono outfits, hairstyles, different apartments and Japanese traditions.
Kimonos will particularly appeal to young girls who will learn about the Kokeshi, their way of life, families and friends, their homes, school, and of course their exquisite kimonos.
