‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Dangerous Journey (The)
by Tove Jansson
Age Range: 6-8
Susanna is bored, confused and cross. She’s sick of all the green that surrounds her and annoyed with her lazy, sleepy cat.
"Susanna woke one morning
Bored and confused and cross.
She gave her cat a warning.
She told it who was boss".
Finding a magic pair of spectacles she puts them on and discovers that the meadow where she is sitting has been transformed into a very different landscape – sometimes it appears like a jungle, a volcano or a dried-up ocean. As she tries to make her way home Susanna is eventually rescued by a balloonist who takes her back to Moominvalley.
Featuring many of the Moominvalley characters, this beautiful version of Tove Jansson’s tale, originally written in 1977, has been brought to an English audience by Sophie Hannah. The gloriously vibrant illustrations together with the deft rhyming text make this picture book an absolute delight. Sophie Hannah’s translation is witty and poetic and a marvellous way to introduce children to the pleasures of narrative verse through this magical story.
The Moomin books are already contemporary classics of children’s literature and this picture book version, like the previous two published by Sort of books - The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My and Who Will Comfort Toffle? is a total joy and one children will want to revisit again and again.
