My First Car was Red
by Peter Schössow
Age Range: Under_5
A trip in your first car is unforgettable even when it doesn’t go exactly to plan. Grandpa has bought his grandson a surprise. Although really rusty the car is exactly the right size but it does need a lot of work. Grandpa helps to do it up and they paint it bright red. Told through the voice of the young narrator, this is a hilarious picture book about a perilous journey that includes driving through a wasp nest, missing low hung tree branches and getting stuck in a stream. The text is clearly laid out and there are plenty of details about cars as well as road signs.
As with Peter Schossow’s wordless picture book ‘More’ (2010), this one is whimsical and full of quirky humour. The illustrations are a mix of autumnal browns and greens with the bright splash of red for the car. Children will enjoy the exploits of the young driver as he veers from one crisis to another on his first car journey.
