‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Lene Kaaberbol
Age Range: 9-11
The moment that magnificent animal rode into the stable yard, Kat was smitten. A silver hellhorse with golden, predatory eyes. Oh to be a bredanari and be able to ride one of these amazing creatures. Kat’s encounter with a real life bredanari – a keeper of the peace and rider of the hellhorses – sets the scene for a dramatic and thrilling adventure full of intrigue.
Beaten by her stepfather Cornelius, Kat’s wild spirit is never broken but her terrible temper often stokes the flames. This is too much for Kat’s mother who decides to send Kat away to some friends who run a Dyer’s Yard. Here life is hard and cruel. Unable to stand it a moment longer, Kat eventually escapes and travels to the City of Breda where she hopes her longing to be a bredanari will be realised. But this burning desire is threatened by her meeting with an outlaw and the dangerous secret she must keep.
This is a story of suspense and extreme physical and mental endurance. Translated into English by the author herself this book is a real tour-de-force. Lene Kaaberbol’s ‘Shamer’ series is also available in English and published in 2005 by Hodder Children’s Books.
