‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)

“HOO HOO”, “HOO HOO” the sound reverberates around the forest. At first, the other animals think it might be a wolf but are relieved to discover that the noise is coming from an owl. They grow concerned when the young owl won’t stop howling and try to sooth it in various different ways – Squirrel offers some food, Mole makes a necklace out of flowers and Crow makes a hammock out of cobwebs but nothing makes any difference as this is no substitute for what the Owl really needs.
The animals’ interactions with each other as they ask the owl a question and the owl answers by howling, creates a rhythm in the story that is perfect for reading aloud.
