‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Philip Waechter
Age Range: 6-8
Bravo! is a delightful story that is both warm and funny. Helena feels her life is almost perfect. She is talented, her little brother is patient and her mother is encouraging. There is only one problem – Helena’s father is always very loud and cannot speak normally. Helena doesn’t like it; everything he says comes out as a roar.
‘WHERE ARE MY SHOES?’ THE COFFEE IS TOO HOT’. He is a shouter and comes from a family of shouters. One day Helena decides to take drastic action. She packs up her belongings and her beloved trumpet and leaves home. Will this finally cure her father of his shouting?
Wonderfully apt detailed illustrations by Moni Port accompany this engaging story by Philip Waechter that deals with the sensitive issue of a ‘noisy’ adult and how a child might react to them. Perhaps a gentle reminder to adults of the important of listening to your child.
