Cinderella (Roberto Innocenti)
by Charles Perrault (1628-1703)
Age Range: 9-11
This `rags-to-riches’ story is one of the most well-known and best-loved fairy tales by Charles Perrault. Roberto Innocenti has chosen to set the Cinderella story in 1920s Britain, which gives him ample opportunity to depict the fashions of the day (flapper dresses, spats, little boys in sailor outfits), the architecture of London (Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster), and the humble stone cottage where Cinderella lives with her step-sisters.
Innocenti’s vision of this timeless story has won international acclaim. He is a master of accurate period detail, but there are also some playful images to look out for in his drawings (e.g. the statue outside the palace is holding an umbrella). These marvellous illustrations are given the space they deserve in this handsomely designed book, and perfectly complement Charles Perrault’s classic version of the story.
