Finn Family Moomintroll
by Tove Jansson
Age Range: 9-11
Tove Jansson’s ‘Moomin’ books have become modern-day classics. They first appeared in 1945 and continued until 1971 by which time 11 titles had been published. Jansson was Finnish but she wrote the books in Swedish and did all the illustrations herself. Puffin Books have published several titles in the Moomin series.
A charming story of the Moomin family and their friends. After their hibernation in winter, they emerge full of energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead and embark on many adventures when they find the Hobgoblin’s magic hat. A classic tale of wonder and enchantment.
Although this title was written after Comet in Moominland, it was the first one to be translated by Ernest Benn and Puffin in 1950.
This classic series by Tove Jansson never ages and is as enjoyable today as when it was written, and the amusing antics of the Moomin family and their friends remain undiminished. Often woven into the stories and carefully disguised are little moral lessons and philosophical observations made by the characters that add authenticity.
