Squirrel's Birthday and Other Parties (The)
by Toon Tellegen
Age Range: 6-8
Squirrel decides to have a birthday party and every creature he can think of is invited. He makes so many cakes, different ones for different animals, that his house is bursting at the seams. Meanwhile, his guests choose something very special to wear to the party and make the squirrel gifts. The party goes with a swing and, after eating lots and lots of cake, they dance and dance.
A bumblebee decides to open a shop selling things hardly anyone ever needs and sells a speck of dust to the grasshopper for a fortune. The snail renovates his house and builds an extension with a balcony. The cricket opens a shop for wish lists, because most animals don’t know what they want for their birthday, and writes on a piece of paper ‘One grass cake’ for the rhinoceros and then adds ‘All kinds of things’ which covered about everything.
Another beautiful set of stories by Toon Tellegen, both poetic and imaginative. This book will appeal to young and old alike. The excellent translation by Martin Cleaver and the enchanting illustrations by Jessica Ahlberg help to make this book a sheer delight.
Letters to Anyone and Everyone is another title available in the series by Toon Tellegen and further titles will be published by Boxer Books later in 2010.
