Florina and the Wild Birds
by Selina Chönz
Age Range: Under_5
Florina lives in a village set in a valley in the Swiss Alps with her mother, father, and brother Ursli. Every summer the family leaves the valley and head for their hut high up in the mountain meadows. One day, while out walking Florina discovers a tiny partridge chick that has lost its mother. She takes the bird home to care for it making food using her doll’s tea set and giving it a special basket for a bed. As the bird grows bigger and stronger it wants to explore and to fly, but has formed a close bond with Florina and is reluctant to leave her side. Finally, Florina must decide whether to keep the bird or release it to fly back to its home in the mountains.
Written in 1952 by Swiss author Selina Chönz, this is a gentle tale accompanied by the delicate illustrations by one of Switzerland’s most well-known illustrators, Alois Carigiet. They both also wrote and illustrated A Bell for Ursli, a well-loved story in Switzerland.
