Big Yawn (The)
by Monika Spang
Age Range: Under_5
This delightful story is a perfect picture book for bedtime. Set in verse it will have children giggling at the contagious yawning of the animals at the zoo as night time approaches. First, the tiger starts to yawn and then it spreads to all the different animals. Children can follow the various antics of the animals as they get ready for bed. There is a chance to see a tiger playing chess, swans doing a foxtrot, a giraffe reading a bedtime story and a donkey cleaning his teeth. The final stop is the Lion’s den.
"These cats like to primp and preen,
till every inch is squeaky clean.
When they’re trimmed from mane to claw,
they give out their mighty roar ...
but really ...
they are yawning!"
A delectable feast of humorous rhyming text by Monika Spang and sumptuous illustrations by Russian illustrator Sonja Bougaeva who wrote and illustrated The Visitor. The rhyming text has been translated and cleverly adapted into English, a difficult task with poetry and credit must go to the translator, Monika Smith, and the two adaptors, Sophie Huber and Penelope Todd. It is the illustrations that make the book so gorgeous though as each individual vignette tells its own story. This is definitely a book that will become a firm favourite to be read again and again.
